C.G. Sargent's Sons History

C.G. Sargent’s Sons began as a textile machinery manufacturing company and evolved to meet industry demands in wool processing, synthetic fiber, synthetic rubber, tobacco, chemical and food processing, often meeting needs worldwide.  Throughout the company's history, it was recognized for producing equipment that is efficient and highly productive.  C.G. Sargent's Sons joined Aeroglide Corporation in 1990.

Textiles and fiber processing

  • Charles Grandison Sargent starts textile machinery making company in 1852.
  • C.G. Sargent & Son was incorporated, specializing in hosiery manufacturing and textile machinery manufacturing.  They became the world’s prominent builder of wool processing machinery
  • By 1878:
    • 151 customers were using Sargent wool processing machinery.
    • 174 Burr Pickers were installed.
    • 27 dryer installations occurred.
  • C. C Sargent’s Sons Corporation was Formed.
  • From the late1800’s to 1980 they sold thousands of machines for Wool, Cotton and Synthetic Fiber Processing world-wide.

Synthetic rubber dryers

  • In the 1940s they developed the Synthetic Rubber drying process with the US Dept. of Defense.
  • The Sargent rubber dryer design was distributed to other dryer manufacturers (including National Drying Machinery Company) to satisfy the war effort.
  • Since 1940 the following companies have used Sargent Rubber dryers: BF Goodrich, Firestone, Copolymer, Goodyear, and Synpol.

Tobacco dryers

  • From 1950 to 1978 C.G. Sargent’s Sons sold over 100 dryers to the tobacco industry, becoming the preeminent tobacco dryer supplier. 
  • Customers include:  RJ Reynolds, Philip Morris International, BAT, Brown & Williamson, Japan Tobacco, Lorillard, Liggett & Myers, and American Tobacco.

Chemical Industry dryers

  • Beginning in the 1950’s, Sargent developed conveyor dryers to process a significant number and variety of chemical products that included:  Kaolin clay, chemicals, pigments, rubber accelerators, and catalysts.
  • C.G. Sargent’s Sons developed state-of-the-art extruders (preformer feeders) for each industry to improve the drying process.
  • Key customers in the chemical industry include Engelhardt, Georgia Kaolin, Georgia Marble, Uniroyal Chemical, Monsanto, Hercules, and Sun Chemical.

Food industry

  • In 1947 Sargent enters the food processing industry by providing a dryer to General Foods, and quickly becomes the major source of drying expertise for processing the following products:  Rice, Potatoes, Bread Products, Cocoa Nibs, Coconut, Apples, and additional fruit and vegetables.
  • The product test facility that provided the capability to test a wide range of food products was built in 1965.
  • Extensive product development led to business with:   Kraft/General Foods, International Multifoods, Stouffers, Quaker Oats, Lamb Weston, and Warner Lambert.
